Student Publications
Minnetonka High School takes pride in its vibrant student-led publications, offering students unique opportunities to explore journalism, creative writing, visual arts and design. Our three flagship publications include Breezes, the school's vibrant newspaper; Muse Magazine, a showcase of student creativity through literary and artistic expression; and The Voyageur, our expertly crafted yearbook that captures the memories and spirit of each school year. Through these publications, students develop real-world skills, collaborate with peers, and share their voices with the entire Minnetonka community.
Breezes Newspaper
Working on the Breezes Newspaper is a full year activity that includes summer hours, especially in the two weeks prior to the start of the school year. Time commitment varies, depending on roles– around 20 hours a month is standard for editors, three to five hours a month for writers. In a typical year, ten regular, 8-20 page issues are published, with the possibility of additional “specials.”
Under the guidance of an advisor, students write, edit and produce the paper. Breezes manages a budget and raises funds through advertising. The staff consists of about 15 editors, 30 staff writers, artists, photographers and ads team members. There is also the opportunity to be an occasional, contributing writer. All positions (with the exception of contributing writers) are filled through an application process.
Muse Magazine
Muse Magazine is an online literary journal that accepts all types of art from poetry to music to paintings. It is run by a small group of students and one adult advisor. During the school year, Muse will put out a Winter and a Spring Edition. Meetings will take place either in the Writing Center, the advisor's classroom, or the Breezes office when it comes time for layout work. Time commitment is smaller than Breezes or Yearbook, but similarly intensifies around publishing time.
Students involved will be tasked with speaking in art, music, and writing classes to help procure work for the journal. On top of that, students will put in hours before and after school and on their own time to finalize the journal layout once submissions have closed. Meetings are typically every other week and involve brainstorming layout themes, plans to advertise, plans for soliciting submissions, and submission reading/listening.
The Voyageur Yearbook
The Voyageur Yearbook is a student led, planned, run, and produced book. There are legal and ethical requirements mandated by the Minnesota Education system because the book is a product of a class. The class is considered .5 of an English elective course and .5 of a photography course. As such, there are education requirements that the Voyageur yearbook practices.
Yearbook includes two semester courses and after-school time as needed at MHS. Applicants go through an application process just prior to spring registration for admission to the year-long class. In June, returning staff members begin the planning and production of the yearbook at a summer yearbook camp. Throughout the first three quarters, students create the yearbook (design layouts, take pictures, interview students, write captions). Fourth quarter, students create the spring supplement and begin planning for the next year. This is a great opportunity for students to learn real world responsibilities and take pride in the results. Underclassmen are encouraged to apply!
