About Family Friends
With a mission to provide love, support and encouragement to families in need, Family Friends was registered in 1987 as a 501(c)(3) in the state of Minnesota. In 1990, longtime Executive Director, Bud Boberg, created a partnership with Minnetonka High School working closely with school administrators and staff to support families beyond the scope of what the school could provide. With these deep roots established, Family Friends continues to partner closely with the Minnetonka School District serving students and families in need of additional support.
Funding
- Family Friends’ largest source of funds is the Minnetonka High School student government which raises funds through their HeartWeek campaign.
- Hundreds of Minnetonka School District staff designate funds for Family Friends through United Way donor-designated gifts.
- Ridgewood Church supports Family Friends through its missions budget and by providing a “home base” for the organization.
- Individual donors support Family Friends through direct contributions.
- Several philanthropic organizations support Family Friends on an annual basis.
- More than 95% of Family Friends’ funding is applied to direct financial assistance for families in need as well as outreach programming (no office furniture, water cooler, glossy bulk mailings, etc…)
Family Friends Program Activities
- Mentoring: Family Friends is present daily in the Minnetonka Schools and community to listen to, support and encourage students to be successful in school and in life.
- Direct Financial Assistance: Family Friends provides immediate financial assistance to families in need of basic necessities such as food, clothing and rent. All assistance is referral based through school or community professionals.
- Dental/Medical Care: Family Friends helps facilitate critical dental services to those students who have barriers to accessing dental care. In addition, Family Friends assist families in accessing health care including partnering with the One Sight vision initiative through Lens Crafters.
- Nutritional Support: Family Friends regularly provides healthy snack to students and programs within the Minnetonka Schools.
- Parent Support: Family Friends maintains regular contact with parents in need of emotional support and guidance. These relationships are ongoing throughout the school year and summer and often enduring through the years.
- Summer Programming: Family Friends partners closely with other youth programs such as Timber Bay and Tree House throughout the summer. These partnerships are designed to ensure that more youth in need of additional support have weekly safe and supervised programming.
- Partnership with Community Organizations: Family Friends maintains strong relations with a network of community agencies. Collaborative in nature, Family Friends often partners with these agencies to puzzle together solutions for families in need.
