Award Honorees

As far as well-known and very successful real estate agent Carl Zinn is concerned, he owes much of his success to the Minnetonka School District – but probably not in the way most people would expect.

Sure, Zinn does not hesitate to say that he received a fine education in the local schools before graduating from MHS in 1961. However, what Zinn is also referring to is the fact that his local firm, Zinn Family Realtors, which is part of Coldwell Banker Burnet, has made the quality of the Minnetonka School District its No. 1 marketing tool.

"As far as I'm concerned, it's as good of a school district as there is in the state, maybe the country," Zinn says. "And when people are looking for a place to buy a home, good schools are usually tops on their list. I feel as if this school district has given me so much that, well ... what can I say?"

Well, he can say that he's does his best to give back to the district that he believes so strongly in. Not only has Zinn and his firm, which includes his wife, Ali, and their sons Hans ('97) and Max ('94), helped market the Minnetonka School District and spread the word about its excellence, but he's been involved in and led a variety of fundraising initiatives and programs to help students in many ways.

For example, Zinn was a founding trustee of the Minnetonka Foundation for Excellence in Public Education and a founding member of "Our Community, Our Youth." He's also been involved with the Minnetonka Booster Club for many years and sponsored numerous teams and activities.

In that regard, anyone in attendance at almost any Minnetonka Schools athletic game, fine arts event, or other activity, is most likely going to see a paid ad from Zinn Family Realtors on the scoreboard or in the program.

"I've certainly tried to give back as much as I can, and I hope it's been enough to truly reflect how highly I think of this district and the people we have here," he says.

Minnetonka's Superintendent Dennis Peterson and other leaders certainly believe he has, as the district presented Zinn with perhaps its highest honor bestowed upon a volunteer and contributor: The Anchor Award.

In presenting the award, Dr. Peterson said Zinn was indeed a worthy recipient because of his "years of consistent leadership and support" of the local schools.
