Elwin Burditte '76

Elwin first remembers his friendships at Minnetonka High School. "It was a great time to grow up," he says. He came to Minnetonka as a freshman from Brentwood, Long Island, in New York.

Elwin had a spectacular athletic career at MHS. In football, he was an outstanding running back for the Skippers during the 1974 and 1975 seasons. His football playing ability landed him a spot on the University of Minnesota Gophers football team where Elwin played with Tony Dungy and Marion Barber Jr.

In track, Elwin was amazing. "As a former head boys coach here at MHS in track, I would have to call him the most dominant track athlete we ever had," said Coach Joe Lane. He is the only male athlete in the history of MHS track to win State titles individually three times: the 100-yard dash in 1975 and 1976, and the 220-yard dash in 1976. He also anchored the '76 championship 4x220 relay and finished second at state in the 220-yard dash in '75 and long jump in '76.

Elwin scored 32 out of the 33 1/2 points tallied for the boys at the 1976 state meet to almost single handedly win Minnetonka's only State track championship. His yardage times converted to metrics make him the fastest 100 and 200 meter runner in the history of the school. His 4x200 relay team is still recognized as the fastest in the schools history. His 22'8" long jump is still the second best in school history. Elwin went on to run track for the Gophers, as well. His 4x100 meter relay team held the Gophers record for nearly 20 years before being broken in the early 2000's. "Elwin was my hero," said Chris Cohen, alum and head track coach for Minnetonka, "he was my role model, and shaped me as an athlete."

Elwin remembers Minnetonka winning the State track meet as the highlight of his athletic career, and being named the Grand Marshall for the State Championship Parade. He is quick to credit Jim Dirks who added points for the high jump, and the members of the 200-meter relay team. He credits Head Track Coach Lane and Sprint Coach Huvlin for helping him become the athlete he was. Elwin was also named both Best Athlete and Best Dressed by his senior class.

Elwin worked for years as an engineer for the railroad, and now works for Navy Federal Credit Union, the largest in the world, where he specializes in collections. He volunteers at Mount Hope Baptist Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he was president of the Young Lions and Hospitality House, and sings in the Men's Choir. Elwin has two children who are both athletes.
