1999 Fastpitch Softball Team

The 1999 MHS Fastpitch Softball team was the first softball team in MHS history to win a state championship. The team excelled with record-breaking performances and numerous all-conference and all-state players.

The 1999 Fastpitch Softball team included:  Stacy (Towne) Adelmann '99, Brenda (Westermann) Broveleit '99, Lindsey Burton '00, Michelle (Boys) Campbell '01, Sarah Engwall '99, Bethany (Stevens) Esse '00, Sarah (Webster) Finger '00, Janet (Nagle) Franzen '02, Morgan Ginther '99, Libby Hewitt '99, Lyn (Peyer) McCulloch '01, Ashley (Murray) Modrow '99, Sophie (Reuning) Moser '99, Becca (Reason) Primus  '02 and Kristin (Nagle) Viger '00.

Although many of the players were highly skilled and experienced, they still had a lot to prove. In 1998, the team faced a tough defeat against Hopkins, ultimately finishing second in the section tournament.

"Hopkins won the state title and that left a bitter taste with my players," recalls coach Mary Beth Wiig. "From the first team meeting of the 1999 season, the Minnetonka Fastpitch Softball players listed winning the state championship as their top goal."

The Fastpitch Softball team achieved their goal through teamwork and excellence,  ending its all-star season with a 21-5 record. In the 1999 MSHSL Tournament played in Mankato, Minnetonka defeated Forest Lake in the final game in a battle between the two top pitchers in the state; Lyn Peyer & Angie Ryan. Minnetonka came out on top, claiming the state title. The state championship was the first one won by the MHS Fastpitch Softball team in school history, and they would follow up with their second title in 2000.

In addition to this high accomplishment, Four players were selected to the All Conference Team, four were All Section, two were named All State and two were named All State honorable mention. Five of the Fifteen players went on to play collegiate softball and three returned after college to help coach at Minnetonka High School.

"I have been coaching MHS Fastpitch for over 30 years and this team was one of the most talented I have ever had the pleasure to coach," concludes Coach Wiig.
