Policy 809 - Naming of Schools and Sites

I.    PURPOSE

Schools and sites shall normally be given names which are indicative of the areas in which they are located. Schools may be named for individuals who have achieved significant places in America, Minnesota or School District life, when appropriate or entities which have contributed significantly to the District. The names of sites which serve a District-wide function (e.g., Administrative Services, Community Education) and for facilities or portions of facilities which are jointly owned by the District and other entities may be named to illustrate the nature of their role in the District. Furthermore, the name of a facility may be removed upon a vote of the Board for valid reasons. Facilities constructed through a partnership between a community organization and the District may be named by the respective community organization if they provide most or all of the funding and the Board approves the name.

II.    GENERAL STATEMENT OF POLICY

Portions of school facilities, such as media centers, gymnasiums and athletic fields, shall be named according to their educational purpose; however, names of individuals or entities may also be associated with these facility sub-units upon designation by the Board. Any named facility existing on the date of this policy adoption will continue to bear that name, unless there is a compelling reason for the Board to delete the name.

  1. Nominations may include names of former board members, one-time District employees, citizens who live within the District, former students in the District, or significant individuals, groups or organizations (i.e. Veterans Field). The Board may consider other naming rights that include significant monetary contributions.

  2. Any facility that is acquired by the District after it has been named will maintain its name if the previous owner had received financial donations for the naming. Whenever a construction of a facility is done on District property by an approved non-profit partner of the District that has provided most or all of the funding, the right of naming the facility will rest with the partner; however, the Board must also approve of the name. A facility that has been named may have the name changed by the Board for valid reasons.

  3. Criteria for nomination include evidence of distinguished service, special school contributions (fiscal or service), or other honors earned which reflect well upon the education received in the District.

  4. Each case shall be acted upon separately by the Board.

  5. Nominations shall be submitted to the Superintendent who will duly inform all board members at the time of nominations and who will maintain a current file of nominations. The decision of the Board in naming shall be final.
