Policy 623 - Summer School

PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to establish parameters for program development and student participation in summer school education services.

1.0    It is the philosophy of the Minnetonka School District to provide opportunities for learning and growth through a summer school program that meets the needs and interests of its students. Summer school may address the following:

1.1    Remedial instruction for students who need an extended period of time to learn essential skills.

1.2    Continuing education of students who may lose educational gains that have been established during the school year over the summer.

1.3    An opportunity for high school students to earn credit towards graduation.

1.4    Courses that broaden and enrich the education of students, opportunities for Middle School students to take high school courses.

2.0    The School Board is accountable, in its governance capacity, for the instructional program and delegates responsibilities to the Superintendent to establish and operate the summer school program.

3.0    Financial support for summer school shall come from four various sources, including:

3.1    District budget. District budget may support summer school costs as determined by the Board.

3.2    Tuition Charges:

3.21    Tuition will not be charged for the following:

3.211    Special Education classes for students who meet the extended school year criteria.

3.212    Courses which qualify for targeted services or ALC funding reimbursement.

3.22    Tuition may be charged for the following:

3.221    Tuition Charges: Tuition may be charged for exploratory/ enrichment courses when other funding sources do not meet course expenses.

3.222    Tuition may be charged for courses taken to receive credit for graduation if other options for the respective courses have been offered in other options and the student has chosen to take the summer school option.

3.223    Tuition fees will be established prior to the announcement of course offerings. Non-resident students will be charged tuition at least equal to the cost of the class.

3.3    State Funding:    Various state funds are provided to support student enrollment in summer school courses under conditions that are imposed by state law.
