About Witness for the Prosecution
Leonard Vole stands accused of murdering a wealthy older widow who had recently made him her heir, not knowing he was married. In a convoluted effort to free her husband, his wife Romaine agrees to testify for the prosecution. The stakes are high and tempers run wild with shocking witness testimony and outbursts from the dock, as a young man fight's to escape the hangman's noose.
Adapted by Agatha Christie from her short story of the same name, Witness for the Prosecution opened in London in 1953, and by 1954 was one of three Christie plays running simultaneously in the West End, a feat which she was the first female playwright to achieve. It opened on Broadway in 1954 to rave reviews, and earned Miss Christie an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Mystery Play.
