When Saya Sabin joined DECA her freshman year, she didn't know anything about it. "I had no interest in business. My friend made me go to the meeting with her, and she ended up not doing it, but I tried it out and that year I was a finalist at state." By sophomore year, Saya qualified for the international conference in Orlando in the category of Apparel and Accessories Marketing.
Saya earned an officer position her junior year and set a new goal: earning a spot in the finals at the international competition. She did, and her Professional Selling project scored in the top ten. As a senior, Saya tried yet another event - hospitality and tourism - and again qualified for internationals. She now imagines a future public relations career. "Because of my experience with DECA," she says, "I enjoy the freedom and creativity of business."
At MHS, Saya challenges herself with a variety of AP courses, as well as editing the Sports and Wellness section of Breezes, the student newspaper. After school, she competes in Cross Country, which she also joined, and found a passion for, with the encouragement of one of her friends.
Saya put her leadership skills to work by forming the MHS chapter of Habitat for Humanity in 2014 with her friend Ricky Graham '17. She has been volunteering with this program since she was young and enjoys that it provides such tangible results: "You actually see your work come to life."
Saya will be heading to the University of Minnesota this fall.
